Silver(I)-dimercaptotriazine (Ag-DMT) functionalized silica has been developed as a highly selective stationary phase for liquid chromatography, specifically targeting unsaturated organic compounds. This novel material demonstrates superior performance compared to previously reported silver(I)-mercaptopropyl (Ag-MP) functionalized silica in terms of retention, resolution, and peak capacity. The enhanced interaction between Ag-DMT and unsaturated molecules is attributed to the stronger electron-withdrawing effect of the dimercaptotriazine group, which increases the positive charge on the silver ions, thereby strengthening their coordination with double bonds. Experimental results show that Ag-DMT significantly improves retention factors for triglycerols (TAGs) and fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEEs), with peak resolutions increasing by up to 667% between key analytes such as C16:4 and C21:5 FAEEs. Additionally, Ag-DMT enables the separation of double bond positional and cis/trans isomers of C18:1 fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs), including challenging pairs like trans-9/cis-9 and trans-11/cis-11, achieving resolutions exceeding 10. In fish oil fractionation, Ag-DMT effectively resolves eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) from structurally similar impurities such as heneicosapentaenoic acid (HPA) and docosapentaenoic acid (DPA), yielding EPA with purity greater than 95%. This represents a significant improvement over Ag-MP, which fails to fully separate these compounds. Thermodynamic analysis via van’t Hoff plots reveals that the enthalpy change during adsorption of FAEEs onto Ag-DMT is approximately twice that observed on Ag-MP, confirming stronger binding interactions.
