The compound inhibits the activity of MMP-9 by binding to its response element and blocking transcription. This inhibition has been shown to be reversible by removal of 2,3′,4,4′,6-Pentahydroxybenzophenone – 85%. 2,3′,4,4′,6-Pentahydroxybenzophenone – 85% also binds to lectins such as concanavalin A and wheat germ agglutinin and can inhibit their activities. 2,3′,4,4′,6-Pentahydroxybenzophenone – 85% has shown anti-cancer effects in mouse models. It induces apoptosis by inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division.
