The present invention relates to a system and method for biometric data acquisition. In particular, the present invention is directed to a system and method for biometric data acquisition that provides a robust initialization process that can be utilized by the positioning and compositing apparatuses of the optical recording system. The apparatus includes an optical recording unit that records the biometric data of the individual in response to an initiation signal from the initialization section. The apparatus also includes a positioning unit that positions the individual relative to the optical recording unit based on information from a directional element, such as an accelerometer or compass. The apparatus also includes a compositing unit that combines at least two images of the individual into one composite image where one image is captured by the optical recording unit and another image is captured by an external camera.
